Biographical Note — Shemsi Mehmeti (1925–2015)

Born in Dumnicë, in Kosovo’s Llap region, Shemsi Mehmeti was a writer, teacher, and journalist whose work helped shape postwar Albanian literature. Believed to have been born on the Night of the Great (Nata e Kadrit)—the 27th night of Ramadan—around April 22, 1925, Mehmeti began his career in education before joining Rilindja, Kosovo’s leading Albanian-language newspaper. As a writer and published author, he became known for his moral clarity, resistance to censorship, and devotion to language and truth. His legacy endures through the Shemsi Mehmeti Literary Estate and the Albanian Heritage Translation Initiative (ABTI).

"The truth of a people lives in its language, and dies in its silence."
